Training and Education

The greatest labour need in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is for skilled workers—workers with education, training and experience. There is not a great need for long-term unskilled labour. While unskilled labour jobs are available, the majority of companies are looking for a skilled and educated workforce.

  • Oilsands companies operate technologically-advanced mines and extraction/upgrading plants.
  • Skilled workers are required for plant operations and maintenance.
  • Workers do not start as general labourers and work their way up. Labour positions are generally needed during the construction phase of an oilsands project and are hired by construction contractors.
  • Entry-level positions require some education or training.

Local contractors and business owners most often require workers with basic reading, writing and math skills. Few opportunities are available for those who cannot read, write and speak English because of safety issues that may arise.

The local college, Keyano College, offers academic upgrading programs, certificate and diploma programs, trades and heavy industrial programs and courses, workforce development, university programs, and continuing education programs and courses.

Employment Service Providers in the RMWB may offer help with résumé, job search and labour market information. They may provide courses or training related to specific occupations, certificates, safety tickets, language or computer skills. The may also provide services for people with barriers to employment. Look at the Looking for Work? document for more information on the services provided.
