Training and Education

The greatest labour need in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is for skilled workers—workers with education, training and experience.

Construction and Industrial
While unskilled labourer jobs are available, there is not a great need for long-term unskilled labour and with the recent downturn, those jobs are becoming less and less.

Local employers require workers with the mimimum of basic reading, writing and math skills. Few opportunities are available for those who cannot read, write and speak English because of safety issues that may arise.

Immigration
In order to work in Fort McMurray, you must be legally able to work in Canada already. Most employers will not help with the immigration process, unless they are hiring for very elite positions, such as top executives. You must go through the immigration process yourself first. Visit the Citizenship and Immigration website for more information on the process and your options.

A good resource for people wanting to move to Alberta is the Service Alberta site. If you want information on how your education and training relate to Alberta's standards, you must go through the Alberta Government's International Qualifications Assessment Service.

Job postings for Foreign Skilled Workers can be found at the Alberta Economic Development website. Developed by the Government of Canada, the Working in Canada Tool can help you learn about Canada's labour market and search for employment facts by occupation and city, town or region. An excellent general website for people thinking of moving to Canada can be found at the Government of Canada's Going to Canada website.

Job Training and Employment Readiness
The local college, Keyano College, offers academic upgrading programs, certificate and diploma programs, trades and heavy industrial programs and courses, workforce development, university programs, and continuing education programs and courses, such as language training.
