NOC
9 – Processing
Local
shops manufacture, repair and modify modules and components
for the oilsand industry.
The oil sands construction projects are enormous in scope,
requiring specialized skills and equipment. Although a
large number of tradespeople are employed in the region,
most modules are manufactured in Edmonton and elsewhere.
Employment opportunities for skilled workers exist in those
shops and with companies that transport the huge prefabricated
modules or components north to the oilsands plant sites.
Co-generation - Oilsands plant/power companies generate
electricity to operate oilsands plants. Excess power is
sold on Alberta's power grid. Heat from the power generation
process is recovered and used for plant processes. Co-generation
facilities operating in the region are:
Pipelines transporting oil produced from oilsands to southern
markets.
Diluent and natural gas piped north for use in oilsands
processes.
