The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is located within the Boreal Forest where poplar, birch, tamarack, spruce, jackpine and balsam fir grow. The forest products industry produces lumber and pulpwood. Sawmill and pulp mill operators work cooperatively with oilsands companies to cut and salvage timber before leases are developed.

Forest harvest activities; including logging, log hauling and reforestation, are contracted out by sawmill and pulp mills to owner operators.

• Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries (ALPAC) is located outside the municipality, between Athabasca and Boyle, but holds timber rights in the municipality.
• Athabasca Northern Railway (ANY) transports logs by rail to southern mills, reducing costs and truck traffic on Highways 63 and 881.
