The Regional
Municipality of Wood Buffalo is located within the Boreal Forest
where poplar, birch, tamarack, spruce, jackpine and balsam
fir grow. The forest products industry produces lumber and
pulpwood. Sawmill and pulp mill operators work cooperatively
with oilsands companies to cut and salvage timber before leases
are developed.
Forest harvest activities; including logging, log hauling
and reforestation, are contracted out by sawmill and
pulp mills to
owner operators.
- Pulpwood
is hauled year round except during the spring thaw and fall
freeze up.
- Winter
is the prime season for timber harvesting. Logs are milled
locally or shipped to a southern sawmill.
