Other Accommodations

Motels and Hotels
Hotels and motels fill up quickly during busy times (e.g. plant turnarounds, maintenance shutdowns). Reservations are recommended.
Standard room, single occupancy ranges from $140 to $300 per night (may not include room tax and GST). Visit Fort McMurray Tourism for more info.

RV Parks
Recreational vehicle park fees in the municipality range from $15 to $29 per day. (may not include tax and GST). Cost per day ranges from $25 to 50. Most serviced spots are $35 to $40 per night, or $1,000 to $1,200 per month. Prices range based on the time of the year and the services provided. Length of stay is limited at recreational parks. Not all services (e.g. sewer) are available year-round. Serviced spots are not always avaiable. Visit Fort McMurray Tourism for more info.

According to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) Census 2010, there were 850 people living in hotels/motels in 2010 and 689 people living in campgrounds in the urban services area of Fort McMurray. These two groups are part of the RMWB's temporary or “shadow” population. Shadow population may include anyone who is present in the community and has a residence elsewhere. This person resides in the community for a minimum of 30 days or on a seasonal basis and is employed or has been employed by an industrial or commercial establishment in the municipality. The number of homeless people living in Fort McMurray last year was 549, as recorded by the RMWB, but many believe this is a low estimate.

Work Camps
Some jobs come with camp accommodations. These are usually shift-work arrangements where workers work for two weeks, and then leave for one week (or some combination of time in and out). Generally it is the contractors hired by the oilsands companies that provide camp housing to their employees, especially during the construction phases and maintenance shutdowns.

Oilsands companies do provide camp housing to some of their direct employees, but they are usually used as benefits and are given to positions that are hard to fill. Camp positions are now harder to find with the slowdown in the economy.

According to the RMWB Census 2010, there were over 23,000 people living in work camps in 2010. The total population of Wood Buffalo is over 104,000.

For more information on getting a job with camp accommodations, view the October 2007 Wood Buffalo Labour Market News (Jobs and camp accommodations).

Contact us, or visit one of the Fort McMurray employment service providers, for a list of contractors that work in the RMWB.
