According to the Regional
Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) Census 2007,
there were 1,423 people living in hotels/motels in 2007
and 1,334 people living in campgrounds. These two groups
are part of the RMWB's temporary or “shadow”
population. Shadow population may include anyone who
is present in the community and has a residence elsewhere.
This person resides in the community for a minimum of
30 days or on a seasonal basis and is employed or has
been employed by an industrial or commercial establishment
in the municipality. The number of homeless people living
in the RMWB last year was 441, as recorded by the RMWB,
but many believe this is a low estimate.
Work Camps
Some jobs come with camp accommodations. These are usually
shift-work arrangements where workers work for two
weeks, and then leave for one week (or some combination
of time
in and out). Generally it is the contractors hired
by the oilsands companies that provide camp housing to
their
employees,
especially during the construction phases and maintenance
shutdowns. Oilsands companies do provide camp housing
to some of their direct employees, but they are usually
used
as benefits and are given to positions that are hard
to fill.
According to the RMWB
Census 2007, there were 18,572 people living in
work camps in 2007. The total population of the RMWB
is 89,167.
